Some Bird Sketches

Some sketches of birds who have come to our bird feeder.  Perhaps there is a future painting or two here.

More Elephants

Also inspired by a photo.  We were in a boat on the Zambezi in Zambia while Mom was watching us warily from the shore just a few feet away.

Doing a drawing first, does help me get the shapes and the shading right.  And this another case, where I am happy with the drawing as well.

A new toy

I spoiled myself, and purchased a new iPad, the 9.7″ iPad Pro.  It works with the apple pencil which really is an amazing drawing tool.   When coupled with a good app the combination is pretty powerful.   This is my first real digital media experience, there is much to learn.

The app procreate – among many other things, will automatically generate a video of your creative effort.   Automatic – I did not know I was generating a video as I drew this.

Cape Buffalo

IMG_2245

A cape buffalo, the painting is from a photo of a fine looking fellow we met in Africa.

Before I attempted the painting, I sketched him (or her?).

And while I am happy with the painting, I like the sketch better, so I’ve framed them both.

Bleak Hilltop

BleakHilltop

This is from a photograph taken in Alaska.  We were visiting some touristy site on a bleak overcast day.  Of course I took lots of photos of whatever the site was.  But at some point I turned around and saw these wind swept trees silhouetted  against a grey sky on the hilltop behind us.  They struck me as an interesting enough view to be worth a photograph.  Then 2 yrs later as I was browsing my photos, I realized that this could make an interesting painting as well.   It is acrylic on canvas, 3′ x 1.5′

Elephants

This painting is from material originally in two photos.  The landscape is the view we enjoyed from our tent on the Lower Zambezi.  There sometimes was an elephant out there, but this pair were from another photo.

Bright Eyes

I have neglected my blog for too long.   Above is a painting of a baby osprey as he waited in his nest for dinner.   The painting is from a photo taken on Currituck Sound in North Carolina.  The painting is Acrylic, 12″ x 16″

Now on twitter

Ok, I’ve joined the 21st century.  Follow me on twitter:  @statgraphic

If I tweet, I must be a bird…  so here is a bird or a bird painting anyway.  A very early watercolor (very!).  You will not see this anywhere else.
